Overview
Earn free CME credit from wherever you are with this engaging weekly podcast series that highlights the latest clinical and research innovations at UAB Medicine. UAB MedCast is ideal for physicians, nurses, technicians, and other medical professionals.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the key factors contributing to kidney nonutilization in the U.S. transplant system and explain how normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) addresses limitations related to allocation inefficiencies and donor organ uncertainty.
  2. Compare normothermic machine perfusion with traditional cold storage and hypothermic machine perfusion, including differences in physiologic activity, functional assessment capabilities, and clinical decision-making value.
  3. Evaluate the potential impact of NMP on transplant outcomes by discussing its role in expanding donor criteria, reducing delayed graft function, and improving access to timely kidney transplantation for patients on the waiting list.
